The Other Space, home to theatre company Ensemble 52, sprang to life with a sell-out performance of Cosmic by award-winning playwright Tom Wells.
Before the play audience members enjoyed a reception in the venue – a sizeable ground floor office provided by Hull businessman Malcolm Scott that has been ‘taken over’ by the company.
All available tickets for the event were snapped up by theatregoers keen to experience drama taking place in unconventional surroundings in the city centre.
E52′s Dave Windass said: “We were overwhelmed by the support shown for our new venture and Tom’s extremely funny play. It was a great way to start to use The Other Space. We’re now busy working on the series of events that will take place at the venue in the coming months. This is a very exciting time for theatremakers and theatre in Hull and we’re proud to be a part of that.’”
E52 founder member Richard Vergette said: “It was a terrific opening night of The Other Space. We had a great play in Cosmic by Tom Wells and that was brilliantly acted by a wonderful cast. Many friends and supporters of Ensemble 52 turned out to wish us well. These are very exciting times for the company.”
E52′s plans for the building include lunchtime and early evening theatre and a large-scale site-specific production later this year. In addition to being a base for E52 and a rehearsal space for the company, The Other Space will also play host to workshops for arts practitioners, be the venue for the recording of a regular arts podcast and could serve as an incubator space for emerging companies.
Dave Windass added: “We aim to make The Other Space the kind of place where people are never quite certain what they are going to experience. This is exactly the kind of space that a city of culture like Hull should have.”
After the show audience members took to twitter.
Broadcaster David Burns tweeted: “Cosmic was cosmic. Tom Wells can write a play. Made me laugh. Loved a real office as a theatre.”
Brand consultant Paul Dennis added his 140 character thoughts, tweeting: “Great first night at The Other Space. Tom Wells’ play Cosmic. Three actors, one small stage area, an old office, another world of a quality drama.”
Caged Theatre Company added: “Really enjoyed Cosmic at The Other Space. Great acting, great script and great space!”
Cosmic was directed by Jane Fallowfield, designed by Natalie Young and performed by Jessica Morley, Ged McKenna and Jamie Samuel. The play was the 2013 recipient of the Larkin25 Arts Award, following E52′s production of Euphoria in 2012.
