Landings is one of a triptych of duets (with Space Between and Anchor Relay) choreographed for the two outstanding dancers, Maedee Dupres and Julyen Hamilton. Its making followed Butcher's attendance of a week's course with Steve Paxton, held at Dartington College of Arts in Devon a few months before, where he was then a full time tutor. It was the first use in the UK by a British choreographer of his Contact Improvisation technique. Landings was also to win her a Royal Society of Arts award.
