Dig ducks? Mad for the mallard? Indulge your fowl fascination here...
I've been studying the local fauna recently and was surprised to learn that Prospect park in Brooklyn (NYC) has a duck dumping issue. People get sick of their ducks when they grow old and ugly - same old story. But ducks, unlike hardier species like cats, have zero chance of going feral.
They don't know to look for snails...and just starve or get eaten by the rabid raccoons that roam the park.
Recently, an abandoned duck - "Willy", was rescued in the park, and made local news. His Facebook page (linked to below) says:
"The park is a wonderful place for the wild ducks like Mallards and other species like the Canada Geese, American Coots, Wood Ducks and Northern Shovelers....but dumping domestic ducks in our local parks is cruel. Unlike the Mallards and other wild species, they cannot fly to another food source or open water. With this bitter Polar Vortex sweeping the area, it can prove deadly.
The domestic ducks can be white (Pekin) or shades of browns (Khaki Campbells, Indian Runners and Rouens). They are vulnerable to predators such as hawks, dogs, and the big predator -HUMANS
Please help spread the word. DUMPING DOMESTIC DUCKS is not only cruel. It is ILLEGAL!"
