Accomplished professional skier Sven Brunso invited Grady James and I on this epic one day mission up the East Couloir of Grand Turk mountain. Located off of the west side of Molas Pass just south of Silverton, CO, the Grand Turk is a massive rock peak with a number of skiing options off of it's grueling faces. Often a spring time adventure, the East Couloir had sluffed off a number of times already this season and is relatively protected from harsh wind and sun exposure providing the perfect conditions to skin into the basin and boot pack straight up the couloir. The skiing was variable with hard wind crust at the top, and mixed punchy-ness. However, as we made out way up, the new snow was coming in strong and leaving about one-and-a-half to two inches of new snow, making the skiing surprisingly awesome as we rolled out the mouth of the couloir. In a few places the couloir was about 200cm wide, making it a very tight fit for my 197mm Völkl Shiros, and I even scraped my tails on a few jump turns. This was a first-time adventure for Grady and I, and an impressive 13th successful mission for Sven. Enjoy! -D.Stucki
