For many years Stockport Cyclists have campaigned for an Off Road Route between Stockport and Marple that would be beneficial to Commuters as well as Tourists wanting to access the MIddlewood Way from the Trans Pennine Trail. The opportunity arose when there was a Nationwide Contest for a Lottery Grant towards a major project. Several projects were put forward and Sustrans - the Sustainable Transport Organisation - came up with the idea of providing links between communities and asked for suggestions. Stockport MBC were persuaded to put forward the Stockport to Marple link as part of Sustrans Connect 2 portfolio and were lucky to be accepted. The public were invited to vote for their favourite project and Sustrans won the contest. This video shows the introduction of a bridge over the River Goyt that has now made possible an attractive walking and cycling route between Marple and Chadkirk which eventually will be part of the Off Road Route onward into Stockport.
