DIRECTED BY ADRIAN BRISCOE
Narrated by Paul Bettany, Dream Town examines Barentsburg, a decaying Russian coal mining town located on Svalbard, the northernmost inhabited place in the world. Looking at the stark reality of the miners, scientists and children, the film contrasts their unusual existence with fictional interludes they created with the director - wherein a miner falls in love with a masseuse, blood thirsty, little-girl werewolves suffer the long moonless summer, a boy grows giant fury hands, and a poet with amnesia welcomes the returning memories of an unrequited love born on desolate, thawing mountainsides. Their vignettes are woven into the fabric of the documentary, creating a hypnotic hybrid of both fact and fiction - a genre bending exploration of identity and survival at the end of the world.
Co-written by novelist Ray Robinson, Dream Town recently won the Best Picture award at both the Chicago Underground Film Festival and the Derby Film Festival.
