in the piazza outside basel’s theatre,
jean tinguely’s ‘fasnachtsbrunnen’
(literally: carnival fountain, but
please, whatever you do, don’t call it
a ‘carnival’ when you’re in basel!...)
regularly freezes over, turning it into a
magical water and ice sculpture.
although the city has to employ a
master craftsman just to repair the
damage the ice does to the fountain
every year, the fusion of art and nature
it creates is considered well worth it.
this video was shot on christmas eve
2007 in two short sessions of about
ten minutes each, and then edited
as a new year’s greeting for 2008.
