The corner featured in this episode is actually a whole city block – what I’ve called the “Education Block”. Some of the earliest images of the block bounded by Cambie, Hamilton, Dunsmuir and Pender show a school of some sort on the property: Central School and the “Old” Vancouver High School (both of which were at different times also the Vancouver School Board HQ – until VSB was moved to the “new” high school in Fairview on the site of what today remains the HQ), Vancouver School of Art (which ultimately came into its own as Emily Carr University), Vancouver Vocational Institue (which merged with Vancouver City College), and today the downtown campus of Vancouver Community College.
A note regarding the soundtrack. It is called The Hut Sut Song and is presented by Sammy Kaye’s Orchestra and the Three (alas, anonymous) Kaydets). The lyrics are nonsense (similar to the lyrics in Mairzy Doats), although an attempt is made by the lyricist to explain their ‘meaning’. It is probably safe to assume that the words aren’t Swedish. While the lyrics are nonsense, however, be warned: the tune is very clever; once it worms its way into your brain, good luck getting it out!
