The families' first choice was invariably the United States, but their first refuge was Camp Traiskirchen, a forbidding guarded compound twenty kilometers from Vienna, Austria. I discovered them there. "To America" and the proposed film begin there, in 1974. Our new film is not only about escape and quest. It is about these families' survival since 1974, about immigrant dreams bumping up against the reality, the surviving hopes, the terrible defeats. It is about the immigrant experience through individual story.
