A New Dance Work by Allison Gray, Lauren Gould, Kristin Killacky, Marina Magalhães and Sophia Stoller
Founding Members of Soul Lab Dance Project
CHRYSALIS is the much-awaited culmination of a 3-year long collaboration between the five founding members of Soul Lab Dance Project: Marina Magalhães (recipient of LA Weekly Theater Award for Best Choreography 2013), Allison Gray, Sophia Stoller, Kristin Killacky and Lauren Gould. Building on the experimental work they have been generating in their creative laboratory, Chrysalis is a powerhouse dance theater work that captures the group's unique voice as LA's premiere all female dance collective. The ferocious all-female cast of the show seamlessly blends contemporary and urban dances with spoken word and live song, exploring themes of female awakening and proving they just might be on the brink of something great. Chrysalis premiered at the Bootleg Theater July 12th-13th, 2013, and is available for booking/touring in 2014.
SOUL LAB DANCE PROJECT is an all female dance collective founded in 2010 by graduates of the UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance. One of the choreographers, Marina Magalhães, received this year's LA Weekly Theater Award for Best Choreography. Their signature eclectic and experimental work has been shown throughout festivals and venues in Los Angeles, including Club Nokia, Highways Performance Space, Live Arts LA, REDCAT Theater's Studio, So-Cal Dance Invitational, and the Fowler Museum at UCLA. The women of Soul Lab weave together Contemporary, House, West African and Afro-Brazilian dances to create work that is visually stunning and viscerally evocative. They claim space with their voices and bodies, and invite people into their creative process, community events and performances to do the same.
