A creative response to the Athenian tragedy by Sophocles. The play is about Oedipus, who was prophesied to kill his father and sleep with his mother. To prevent this from happening, Oedipus' father, King Laius, ordered Oedipus to be killed when he was born. This failed however, and Oedipus was taken to Corinth where he grew up unaware of the prophecy. Later he traveled to Thebes, and killed a contender who he did not recognize, but turned out to be his father. When he arrived in Thebes, he saved the city from the Sphinx by solving a riddle and became the new king, thus marrying the widowed queen, his mother. This is all pretext to the play itself, which is all about how Oedipus discovers the (obvious) truth.
