This is the second time-lapse in my project “Not Made in China. In this video I have documented the making of a wooden bowl and a spoon. The wood for both was felled in Stewards Wood where I shot the time-lapse. They were made using ancient techniques and tools with no electricity needed, only man power and time. The carver is Sharif Adams who is a thoroughly nice chap and great host during my trip to Exeter. Please check out his website, sharifadams.co.uk, for more of his brilliantly made produce and other information about the carving workshops he runs as well as his blog where you can find out what he has been up to lately.

During the course of filming this video I was constantly amazed by the skills applied to make these objects. All look very easy when done by someone with Sharif s level of expertise, but I know from trying that it is far from easy when trying it yourself. I was also struck by the thought that these skills must have been handed down generation to generation for hundreds of years so to lose them now would be a damn shame as we are just beginning to understand how much damage has been done to our planet and techniques like this may well be needed more in the next hundred years.
