A short interview by ArtTV in Switzerland for the Urban Sounds group exhibition in Basel, Switzerland. This edited version shows the work of Maria Chavez and her interactive sound installation, Urban Drift. The group exhibition was on view from Sept. 20th- Nov. 3rd at the Haus für elektronische Künste Basel:
Edited glitchy video of the riots in London in 2011 plays on a constant loop accompanied by one turntable which plays a multi-layered abstract record composition composed by Chavez. By utilizing the McGurk effect, visitors are invited to watch the video and play the vinyl composition in order experience the visual and auditory components which naturally sync the sound to the video.
Chavez’s work focuses on live circumstances, accepting accidents and allowing what she calls “the Language of Chance” to unfold.
