Luca Abete is a correspondent of “Striscia la Notizia”, a television format broadcasted by Canale5, the flagship channel of Mediaset. Such format is a satirical newscast, halfway between journalism and vaudeville show, that deals about inefficiencies on the Italian Country, directly denounced by citizens.
Since 2005, Luca Abete has been fervently facing troubles about the city of Naples, with more than 80 reports concerning garbage crisis. For this reason, he has become an opinion leader about the disaster going on in the so-called “Terra dei Fuochi” (land of fires), an area located north of Naples, that includes 42 cities and that hosts 1 million people, in which the criminal organization called “camorra” illegally disposes special waste and toxic substances burying them below the soil or burning them. The subsequent pollution has strongly increased the tumor rate in the local population.
For this reason, in the last weeks the so-called “Terra dei Fuochi” has become the object of debates and reportages in all Italian media and in foreign press.
Luca Abete was one of the first to denounce the seriousness of such situation, showing hard-to-see images and often filming people in the act of committing the crime. He is then considered an expert of what is seen the greatest mass-poisoning of the Italian history.
