In this video we will take a look at the DitoGear MiniJib. Though it is promoted as a TimeLapse, Stop Motion and Miniature jib we wanted to test real time video. We figure if it can handle that the smaller steps would be no problem. We shot most of our test with the Sony FS700 connected to the Odyssey 7Q RAW recorder. Everything was shot in 2K and we are hoping that any wobble or problems would be very apparent.
Overall we were very impressed. The jib is able to move a lot of weight with very little side effects. Repeatability test went over extremely well for a jib. If you are a compositor or in the world of VFX you will find this very handy for bringing together multiple passes. We have no doubt time-lapse and stop motion results will be on par or better.
The downsides are really the setup time. Though the rig is simple enough to assemble there is just a natural side effect to the process. Setting up 4 or 5 axis of motion control, calibrating them, and plotting out a shot of that complexity takes time. Though it is also fair to say if you did not use a lens drive or a second OminHead the setup time would be much less. I wouldn't really fault DitoGear for this as the Evolution system is very simple to use it is simply a time intensive task to prepare everything for shots like this. If your looking for faster setups in the field the Omnislider is still your best bet.
