Four hundred years on, why are people still fascinated by paintings by Caravaggio and those who followed in his footsteps? The simple answer is the light, the emotion and the power of the story in their pictures. They speak directly to us as people today, and that is what has fascinated many film makers. One of them is Martin Scorsese.
A selection of 30 oil paintings from Nationalmuseum’s collection of Caravaggisti and related artists can be seen in the exhibition Hans Gedda & Masters of Darkness. The exhibition is on show at Nationalmuseum's temporary venue at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, December 5, 2013 until 30 March, 2014.
