The culture house of Vollsmose in Odense, Denmark, wanted to create a room of wonder for kids aged 5-7. The room should be the scene of three weeks storytelling for children from the surounding area. Three weeks, three different storytellers, three stories by Hans Christian Andersen. Aprox, 600 children got to experience the Wonder Room, hear the stories and draw pictures in the dim light beneath the night sky.
A lot of the material was found in my garden or in the surrounding woods. We wanted to create a room, which was both real and surreal at the same time. Overdimensioned musrooms, winter and summer elements mixing and impression of the dark sky were softend by lanterns and blankets for the children.
It took us fifteen days to create, more or less.
I had the priviledge, apart from being one of the creators of the room, to be one of the storytellers aswell. It worked just as we had hoped for. Enhancing the magic of the stories and the childrens ability to create images themselves.
