Created in collaboration with Oxfam Connect in South Africa:
"The world is changing, and with it the fight against global poverty and injustice.
New policies by governments such as China, India, and South Africa have reduced poverty far more than international aid. The practices of global corporations often have more impact on people’s lives than their governments. The renewed scramble for natural resources is one driver of rapidly increasing inequality, another is natural disasters making poor people all the more vulnerable.
Human rights agreements won at policy level are failing when they are not accompanied by good governance and changes to the beliefs of the wider population. On the positive side, social media has allowed direct witnessing and exposing of human rights abuses in ways that are far more powerful than reports.
These shifts require changes in the fight against poverty and injustice, and in Oxfam. We need to influence far beyond our sector, to transform how people, governments, and corporations think and act.
As one of the most influential global brands, with over 70 years of experience in more than 90 countries, Oxfam has the credibility and clout to influence others.
But we need to be more externally focussed. We must influence others to do things, rather than trying to solve the world’s problems with our limited means.
We must develop the skills and culture to leverage our greatest resources: our knowledge, our connections and networks, and our brand.
This is what Oxfam Connect is all about! It is how the Oxfams’ in Southern Africa will work together, and with others, to achieve this transformation. It is our response to the changes in the world, and the changes in Oxfam.
Oxfam Connect links all of us as one Oxfam, connecting affiliate headquarters, country programmes, and regional teams. It also links us externally, connecting us more strongly to change agents outside Oxfam.
All of this is part of building a powerful worldwide influencing network that can catalyse change and shift power and resources in favour of poor people.
At the heart of Oxfam Connect is the idea that by pooling our resources, by sharing our work and knowledge, all of the Oxfam’s and our partners and allies can make much more of a difference. "
