LA’s Most Empowered Organization Honors 9 Urban Elites For Their Contribution To The Community
Los Angeles, CA, 19, April 2011: -- On April 28th, 2011 hundreds will gather for the 38th annual Whitney M. Young Awards Dinner, but at 9 o’clock the after party begins. The Los Angeles Urban League Young Professionals roll out the purple carpet to honor nine dynamic, savvy and civic-minded African American professionals at the iconic Beverly Hilton Bar 210.
As the parent organization, Los Angeles Urban League, celebrates 90 years of dedicated service, the young professionals will elevate the evening “To the Nines,” to create a rare social networking experience. Featuring the legendary sounds of DJ Dense of the LA Clippers, delectable dishes, and gifts from our sponsors, guests will not go home empty-handed.

The Divine 9
Adai Lamar - "The Voice" Rapidly becoming the new voice of LA, the KJLH morning host advocates for youth and women's issues through the Boys and Girls Club of America and Sisters Who Care.
Kenneth Billups III - "The Entrepreneur" Ken has created not one, but four leadership and professional organizations. From the Young Professional Network and Downtown LA Network to youth-based programs like CLIMB Inc., no audience is left unmoved.
Sean Blakemore - "The Actor" The NAACP Theatre award winner and noted television and film actor has over 15 years in public service. He dedicates his passion for fine arts to Habitat for Humanity, Portfolio Gallery Mentorship and Feed the Homeless LA.
Alex Lawrence - "The Man with the Plan" The Executive Director of Riordan Programs, Lawrence has guided over 2000 at-risk youth towards degrees in Business. From within the UCLA Anderson School of Management he redefines the future of urban LA.
Joy Pena - "The Motivator" As a diversity consultant for Walt Disney Animation Studios, Joy understands the need for effective outreach and development; mentoring emerging professionals and youth through her program, "Sister 2 Sister and Brother 2 Brother."
Cherice Calhoun - “The Social Network” Through BlackNLA, Calhoun organized an online community that extends from the web into real-time networking, social events and professional resources. As noted by SoftSheen-Carson, she is the ultimate resource for the African-American community in Los Angeles.
Edwin Charles Redway - "The Celebrity Chef" From amateur cooking competitions to Le Cordon Bleu - London, Chef E. Dubble has not forgotten his native L.A. In between celebrity gigs for Maxwell and nutritional feasts for athletes like Brandon Jennings, you'll find him serving holiday meals to the homeless.
Gilda Clift Breland - "The Legal Maven" As shareholder of McBirney & Chuck, P.C., president of the John M. Langston Bar Association of Los Angeles, pro-bono work at the Mesereau Free Legal Clinic and countless hours mentoring students, one can't help but wonder where does she find the time?
Terita Norton - “The Rocket Scientist” Norton designs Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicles also known as rockets. The award-winning engineer inspires the next generation of Black Engineers through Saturday Science Academies, Aerospace internships and the NSBE Junior Chapter.
