Kwesi Sey, known as Kwes, is a record producer, songwriter and musician, born and raised in South London's' Lewisham. His passion for music began while playing his grandparents' organ at the age of four. For his tenth birthday, he received a tape recorder with a built-in microphone, launching his interest in sound recording. Kwes released his debut solo album ilp. in 2013 through Warp Records. The industry began to label his music as experimental pop, however, Kwes remains unconvinced; 'As far as sonic identity goes, I don't think there's so much a concrete sound. I think you can guarantee one thing, that anything you hear from the South will be creative and slightly off, or slightly different.' This intimate performance of 36 was shot as part of our New Music Cities South London project. Mixing a low-key bass guitar with electronic keyboards and gentle percussion, Kwes' echoing voice lends an eerie quality to the beautiful harmonies. Sit back and enjoy.
