The Theory of the Multiple Intelligences and Collaboration
Since Howard Gardner in 1983 expanded the concept of intelligence to define it not as something unitary that brings together a series of specific skills, but as a "mental ability to solve problems and / or develop products that are valued in one or more cultures" the world of education has undergone many transformations. First, it allowed to change the perspective we have on the capacity of humans describing not one but up to eight types of intelligence (musical–rhythmic and harmonic, visual–spatial, verbal–linguistic, logical–mathematical, bodily–kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalistic) and, therefore, proposed a framework in which the concept of intelligence has a different vision, an holistic and dynamic concept . Second, it allowed opening a reflection on intelligence not working if is not to help others because to work multiple intelligences makes sense from cooperative work.
Designing intelligence from this perspective also allows adults rethink differently. First rethinking the concept of intelligence that we had so far. We thought it was only in intellectual abilities?, Did we study intelligence from this holistic perspective?. And further: do we consider intelligent competing or cooperating? It looks increasingly clear that learning is meaningful for the student (regardless of age) when what is learned serves to others. Growth is to learn together, for all, educators, alumni / ae, professionals, etc.
The ikasHUB team travelled to Barcelona in October 2013 to know in depth how Col- Legi Mare de Deu dels Angels and Col.legi Montserrat actually make the theory of multiple intelligences a reality and go beyond by working with emerging pedagogies. In the Col- legi Mare de Deu dels Angels we could talk with Nuria Sánchez Povedano, whom we have brought you today to explain what the multiple intelligences are and how to combine with cooperative work. Thank you very much, Nuria.
In ikasHUB we propose this collaborative work as a base for our learning experiences. Welcome everybody to the world of ikasHUB.
