I've wanted to go to Times Square to do this for a while. We know them as people who get in the way of our commute, people who prey on tourists, people who probably don't have much going income-wise, people who I guess put up with loads of shit from everyone.
My verdict, they handle it pretty well.
I spent around 4 hours trying to get a sense of who's who. I assumed it's as cut-throat as the standard street vendor business environment but it was quite the opposite.
They work together to a surprising extent. I guess given the narrow geography of their target demographic, children leaving Toys-R-Us, they have to be understanding in minding each others personal space. Beyond that, they actually work together. Everybody seems to split tips in some form. Democratic.
