« Valter » HD Video 2.30 min. Sarajevo, 2013
« Valter » is a public space action I did in the center of Sarajevo.
Valter is a Yugoslav Hero of the Second World War. He defended Sarajevo from the German Nazi occupation. A discrete monument represents him in this city. It is placed close to the old electric power station, wedged between two streets and some bushes. The same electric power station, that he defended, is today a ruin It was destroyed during the Yugoslav War in the 1990s. Valters nose was broken. Twice. The statue was restored and the nose was broken again, keeping the first trace visible with another color. I modeled a new plaster nose on Valters Monument ( in May 2013) with the naive idea to repair and wake him up. Since then several other tentative outbreaks of revolution (in June 2013, February 2014) have happened, without success ...
The broken nose is for me a metaphor about how culture, monuments and memory are suffering from politics and nationalism. Valter is still today a popular and strong figure for the city of Sarajevo - symbolizing partisans and resistance.
