Mike O'Connor, who died Dec. 29, 2013, of an apparent heart attack, was a hard-charging advocate on behalf of reporters in one of the most dangerous countries to practice journalism - Mexico. He investigated murders and threats, offered counsel, lobbied lawmakers and officials. Yet long before that, he was an award-winning journalist who worked for decades in broadcast and print, from Central America and Haiti to the Balkans to the Middle East. He was relentless, indefatigable and ever possessing of a keen, infectious sense of humor. He is sorely missed.
