Il film, documentario paesaggistico di grande suggestione, deve alcuni tra i suoi momenti più felici alla tecnica del "phantom ride" che sfrutta la dinamica di riprese compiute con la macchina da presa montata su veicoli in movimento. Ogni mezzo di trasporto risponde a diverse regole di percezione del paesaggio: se l’incedere del treno ci offre la possibilità di attraversare a tutta velocità il paesaggio innevato del Gottardo attraverso cumuli di neve e gallerie (01:36), il traghetto ci offre una visuale di respiro più ampio (03:58), mentre il viaggio in funicolare propone allo spettatore uno sguardo aereo, sospeso e variabile che emancipa il film dall’ “effetto cartolina” (04:43). Il ritmo di montaggio del film è a tratti incalzante, ben modulato con la scelta di tagli particolari di inquadratura, spesso finalizzati a creare contrasti tra penombra e controluce, panorami e dettagli o colori diversi. Tra i titoli della Tiziano Film conservati al Museo Nazionale del Cinema, "Dal Verbano alla Svizzera attraverso il Gottardo" è quello in cui l’uso artistico delle colorazioni tocca le più alte punte espressive, sia osando accostamenti inusuali come il viraggio rosso accostato all’imbibizione gialla, sia alternando colorazioni diverse per riprese dello stesso soggetto rendendo così più variato e interessante il susseguirsi di panoramiche.

FROM THE VERBANO TO SWITZERLAND THROUGH THE GOTTHARD
The film, a greatly suggestive documentary on landscapes, owes some of its happiest moments to the phantom ride technique, which makes use of the momentum of shots taken with the camera mounted on moving vehicles. Each means of transport answers to differing rules in perceiving the scenario: if the advancing train offers us the possibility of crossing the snowbound scenery of the Gotthard at high speed through snowbanks and tunnels (01:36), the ferry-boat offers us a broader panorama (03:58), while a trip on the cable-car offers the spectator a suspended and varying aerial view, which emancipates the film from a “postcard effect” (04:43). The editing rhythm in the film is pressing at times, well modulated with a selection of particular framing cuts, often aiming at the creation of contrasts between shade and backlight, different panoramas and details or colours. Amongst the Tiziano Film titles preserved at the Museo Nazionale del Cinema, "From the Verbano to Switzerland through the Gotthard" is the one where the artistic use of colouring touches the highest expressive peaks, both in daring unusual pairings such as a red toning flanked by yellow tinting, both in alternating different colouring for takes of the same subject, thus making the succession of scenarios more varied and interesting.
