With the 2.5k BMCC, you have 3 shooting modes - Raw, ProRes HQ and DNxHD.
ProRes HQ and DNxHD are so close I haven't bothered testing them both.
If we look at two of the shooting formats, we can see on paper that there is a huge difference in quality.
CINEMA DNG DATA:
2400x1350 (after debayering)
Bayer pattern data
12bit (unpacked to 16bit) depth
The general consensus is that the two formats are both fantastic - but that the Raw mode will give you significantly more flexibility and quality - especially in extreme situations.
I wanted to find out how big the difference was - I was shocked.
All the grading was done using Davinci Resolve. Exposure adjustments for the Raw files was done from the Raw tab exposure slider - all exposure adjustments for the ProRes files were done via Lift/Gamma/Gain etc.
Apart from a Node or Raw controls to match the exposure levels - both had the exact same node adjustments applied each time.
See what you think, I would love to hear your thoughts.
