This video is a recording of a webinar presented by Agatha Van Ginkel of SIL International for the MTB-MLE Network on January 27, 2014. The presentation explores research-based best practices regarding the effective introduction of additional languages in mother tongue-based multilingual education. The presenter provides an overview of the conditions and competencies necessary for learners and teachers to be successful in teaching and learning in an additional language, as well as presents recommendations for policy and program planning.
Our presenter, Dr. Agatha van Ginkel, is a consultant for SIL International’s Africa Area. Most of her career has centered on the areas of literacy and languages, and aspects of first, second, and foreign language acquisition. Recently, much of her attention has been focused on multilingual literacy in Africa. She has been involved in planning, monitoring, and evaluating mother tongue-based (multilingual) education programs in over 20 languages in Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria.
