Mackinaw Queen III
Artist: Ben Gale-Schreck
This is the third piece branching off of my Mackinaw Queen series. Within these works I was attempting to reconnect to my childhood as I addressed my own struggles as a father to provide these same experiences for my children.
The name Mackinaw Queen came from a boat owned by a family friend. All that remained of the vessel was a green and white nameplate reading Mackinaw Queen. Never having seen the original boat, I was left to imagine what the Mackinaw Queen really looked like.
Growing up in the Mackinaw river valley of Illinois, I learned how precious the area to be. It is sacred. For me the act of canoeing became a spiritual act. It is that moment of resonance, which I experience upon the water that I try to channel through my work.
With Mackinaw Queen III, I wanted to emphasize the preciousness of our past in regards to our future. Fabricated from repurposed materials, each component of the piece brings its own history. This historical context, transforms my materials from objects, into tangible memory.
With a lot of my work I examine archaic technologies and their relevance in our current culture.
