Today the forty days of Christmas come to an end and so we pause in the regular Epiphany season narrative (the visit of the Magi, Jesus’ baptism by John, the wedding at Cana, the calling of the first disciples, Jesus’ early ministry) for a flashback to the account of Mary and Joseph, following Jewish custom, presenting the baby Jesus in the Temple. This moment was the long-awaited answer to the prayers of Simeon and Anna. Their patience and faithfulness serve as a wonderful example to us even today. God does indeed answer the prayers of His people, but in His own good and gracious time.
