Last summer, as part of a group residency with collective REPRE at DegreeArt's Execution Space. Artist Patrick Simkins created an interactive installation that encouraged visiting members of the public to dismantle a piece of his work. The public were asked to break down three heads that were collaged on top of each other and rebuild two portraits in their own image, on a separate wall. The concept invited the public to question the value of a culture in which we preconceive others, particularly with the media as a vehicle and the role we play within it. More than 65 people took part and the piece proved to be highly dynamic, appealing to peoples' innate desire to get involved and be part of the artistic process and produced some fascinating results and reactions.
