Folksinger & activist Pete Seeger is one of three people featured in Michael & Philip Burton's 1961 film "Wasn't That A Time" which tells of the often devastating impact of the House Un-American Activities Committee's targeting of individuals they deemed "subversive" during the 1950s Cold War. You can read Seeger's 1955 testimony to HUAC here peteseeger.net/HUAC.htm
Michael Burton very generously gave Appalshop use of a selection of the film that includes Carl and Anne Braden, also targeted by HUAC, for our documentary "Anne Braden: Southern Patriot" by Anne Lewis & Mimi Pickering. Learn more about annebradenfilm.org
"Wasn't That A Time" is a pioneering example of independent documentary filmmaking when technology changes allowed camera and sound people to become more mobile and independent of each other, and the rise of the "cinema verite" style.
