The Woman and the Wallpaper is an interpretation of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's 1892 short story about the impact of the male-dominated medical profession of her day and its approach to treating women suffering from a range of emotional conditions. While not identified by name, the "Mitchell Rest Cure" of that era, and the author's own experience with that particular treatment as authorized by her husband, is a special inspiration for the story.
