Pastor John Van Sloten continues our sermon series on The Beatitudes and will focus on these words of Jesus, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6, NIV
What do you hunger and thirst for in life?
“How I long for your precepts!
In your righteousness preserve my life.
May your unfailing love come to me, Lord, your salvation, according to your promise;”
Psalm 119:40-41, NIV
The hungering and thirsting, “long for what is right, they crave justice, they cannot live without God’s victory prevailing; for them right relations in the world are not just a luxury or a mere hope but an absolute necessity if they are to live at all.”
Frederick Dale Bruner, p169, The Christbook
“How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? Defend the weak and the fatherless;
uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.”
Psalm 82:2-3, NIV
“We are created for more than just a full belly, we are created for God.”
Eugene Peterson, Regent College lecture
“Man’s supreme perfection is to be in need of God.”
“Lord, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress.”
Isaiah 33:2, NIV
