This work is an exploration of the occupation of pre-independent Malaysia by the Japanese during and following World War II. Portraying the 1942 Sook Ching massacre through the single account of Wong Kum Pend, one of the few survivors of the detention cells, it uses current animation techniques to delve into the complex psychological effects of war. Doghole is Wong’s attempt to produce, in his own words, a “beautiful” film about violence, relating one event to other incidents.
