My muse for this montage project emerged after I revisited the Hope dialogue audio files and began noting lines that I found to be humorous, “What do you want me to do, bake a cake or something?” was the specific dialogue that sparked my creativity, eventually serving as the foundation for my project’s message and intent. I found myself chasing non-copyrighted media files surrounding the baking, pastry and birthday party industry and sought audio files that were parallel to these themes. Much of the media I encountered included “how to” tutorials, home videos of birthday parties and old Pillsbury™/ Gold Medal™ Flour commercials. My conceptualization then became focused on piecing together a story of evolution and growing up, an element of life that requires all of us to fail/ fall down sometimes in order to learn and continue moving forward. Intuitively I feel that birthday parties and cakes symbolize or represent one’s growth and evolution— and with that bringing more knowledge and wisdom with each passing year.
I attempted to illustrate this analogy of “one step backwards, two steps forward” through the cake baking process utilizing common kitchen sounds such as a clicking timer, dings, eggs cracking for the the audio. Conversely, I felt that the use of black and white filters both in the beginning, middle and end and the reverse, slow/fast motion editing choices would be effective in portraying growth and evolution, not only of oneself, but of society as well.
