In the second of two presentations, Ian Price a Clinical Nurse Specialist in pain management, for the multidisciplinary chronic pain service, based in Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, presents and discusses the utilisation of their opioid contract in three patient case studies.

Case studies: A lady with chronic fatigue syndrome and right sided face pain, an elderly gentleman with peripheral, central and motor neuropathy and a lady with low back pain and leg pain.

Ian presents their biopsychosocial chronic non-malignant pain related problems and their pain management history. He then discusses how the opioid contract was used within a multidisciplinary, biopsychosocial model, reflecting on the overall outcome of using this management strategy.
Key message

The use of an opioid contract requires a multidisciplinary, biopsychosocial approach to assess and manage patients on strong opioids with chronic non-malignant pain. However, the long-term outcomes rely on patient compliance.
