San Cristobal de las Casas has many a claim to fame. It is the cultural capital of the Mexican state of Chiapas. There is a strong indigenous population, both demographically and politically. In 1994 the Zapatistas, a guerrilla group opposing neoliberalism and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between Canada, the United States, and Mexico, occupied parts of the city and made global headlines. Finally, the Mexican state prefers to highlight the magic of the city, la ciudad magica. This is one of the few things where the state got it right.
