In June 1973 NORRA held a 622 mile "Baja 500" and of all entrants who would pull the one of the very last starting position out of the hat, it would be Parnelli Jones who drew #307! For the man who won two consecutive NORRA "Mexican 1000" races in 1971 and '72, it would seem possible, but then again, P.J. pulled the #63 for the maiden voyage of the "Big Oly" Bronco, and did one car ahead better the next year with #62. For the 1973 "Baja 500" there would be over three hundred vehicles of all sorts in front of him and co-driver/mechanic, Bill Stroppe. Could he win?
I was twelve year old and was in Camalu - some 220 miles into the race when the #307 flashed in 20 minutes ahead of schedule! "Yippie!" as I ran over.... But then... I stopped short... There was an argument and Stroppe was winning.
Well, perhaps... In fact, just the year before, Checkers M/C member Bobby Ferro pulled the #297 and he won!
