The Holocaust has always been a part of my Jewish emotional and educational experience. Innocent people forcibly followed the evil. Suffering people yearned to follow any glimmer of goodness. Visiting the death camps was so very traumatic and inexplicably difficult. One way that I was able to cope was through song and being behind the lens. I made up scenarios of relationships that supported hope, love and connections as families were ripped away from one another and simply gutted.
This song represents a story line I imagined of an old man and a young boy who find the strength to survive by hearing of each other's pasts and hopes. The young boy can't understand why at such a young age his loved ones have "walked" away. The old man recites tales of lost love and broken wishes for a son, the boy aches for the man.
I know that there are some miraculous relationships and stories that rose from the atrocities of my people's past. I only wish there were more.
