I just mixed the Tuesday night jazz jam session live from the Terrace Lounge the bandstand was burned up that night January 12th - Marvin Bugalu Smith (Drums), Derrick James (Sax), Mark Hagan (Bass Mark Tarnell guitar and a new exciting tenor sax player Plus: Bugalu's Drum Crew and other special guests
Yes I was blessed by the wonderful talents of Mr. Derrick James on alto sax and the very wonderful Mark Hagan on bass two men that I love with all my heart and this is the reason why I love both these men so much. First Derrick James because Derrick always bring the house down armed with his great wisdom of the cords and the blues and the great emotional content that live inside of him he is one of the greatest master’s of the alto sax in this time that we live in now. And then there is my good friend Mark Hagan on bass I love Mark Hagan for his wonderful inter play on the bandstand drum and bass and he is the kind of bass player that’s not afraid to use his bow in his work on the bandstand this creates
A bond of togetherness and love on the bandstand
YOUR GOODNESS
. The 2nd song, Beatrice was so absolutely beautiful when Marvin continued and extended Mark Hagan's solo and went away from the drumset and sat on the floor with his sticks scratching and adding OVERTONE and HARMONICS perfectly "IN TUNE" with Hagan's phrasing and the two of them created a duo from what everyone thought was going to be a SOLO. Marvin continued on the floor, grabbing a mike and chanted, breathed and pulsed the groove right through that mike and slowly walked back to the drums as everyone thought he would start his drum solo only to find out that his position back on the drums was to continue THAT" BEAUTIFUL HEARTFELT DEEP GROOVE " AND SET THE STAGE FOR ALL THE GUYS TO TAKE IT HOME AND END WITH A DRAMATIC FINALE. Wow! A great example of NOT wanting to have the spotlight shining on the individual but instead putting each player and the overall musical experience ahead of ourselves. Being concerned about "the other player's joy and not your own" is what makes Marvin Bu Ga Lu Smith's sessions the MASTER SESSIONS THAT THEY ARE. I loved Tanellie's guitar playing and the blending of both Xavier Perez and Derrick James on all three songs. I hope and pray that all drummers have a chance to come to New York and hear Marvin and THE CATS "LIVE" or pay and fly them all out to you. I can't begin to tell you how important it is for our Jazz Industry to RECOGNIZE THIS LIVING LEGEND, MARVIN BU GA LU SMITH and to pay tribute to him as THE MASTER THAT HE IS.MANY OF OUR "MASTERS" ARE GONE AND WE CAN'T TALK TO THEM AND HUG THEM. REMEMBER ELVIN'S HUGS AND HOW HE ALWAYS SQUEEZED YOU WITH LOVING CARE. NOT ONLY IS MARVIN HUGGING EVERYONE THAT WAY BUT HE'S DOING IT ON THE DRUMS AND DOES IT IN SO MANY WAYS AS A PRODUCER,DIRECTOR,COMPOSER,ARRANGER,SPIRITUAL ADVISOR,AUDIO ENGINEERING and AS AN UP AND COMING VIDEOGRAHER. His mission goes beyond Jazz. He is interested in all forms of music and poetry, writing and painting, all of the arts is what Marvin is about. If you never met him, start getting to know him through the music. We are drummers on a special mission of spreading WORLD PEACE THROUGH LOVE and SOUND VIBRATION IS OUR PAINT, THE WORLD IS OUR CANVASS. We WILL PROMOTE HEALING LOVE. THAT"S WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT. SELF SECOND,CREATOR FIRST.
