The Harvest & The Laborers - Matthew 9:35-38
California’s Central Valley is the most fertile area in the world with thousands of varieties of vegetables & fruits. 80% of our carrots are from there. When it’s time to harvest, it yields six million pounds of carrots a day. It produces more canned tomatoes that any place in the world, enough Almonds to make a pile as high as the Empire state building & enough raisons for every person on the earth to have one. Most likely if you’ve bought canned or frozen vegetables, at least 1/3 of it came from the Central Valley of California.
But there’s always a problem. There never seems to be enough laborers to bring in the harvest. Year after year, many crops & always a part of every crop, rots in the field because they couldn’t get enough people to harvest it. Modern machinery helps with some crops but only a human can pluck a ripe tomato or knows when a cluster of grapes are at their best.
Jesus’ day had the same problems & He often used this background to illustrate spiritual matters: Parable of: Laborers, Vineyard, Wheat & Tares. He uses it here to share His burden for ministry.
