RESSIES END BRIDGE'S UNBEATEN RUN
Whale Bridge 0 -1 Billinge FC
A first-half Rob Ablewhite goal was enough to sink high-flyers Whaley Bridge reserves on Saturday.
The Derbyshire side had not lost in the League all season and were undefeated in 23 games in all.
However this Billinge side - with Geoff Parr managing it for the first time - are a resilient team and they fully deserved the victory.
They took the game to the visitors, created a number of chances and when - in the second-half - they had their backs to the wall defended superbly.
Tom Darkes had an early chance to put The Storks ahead but after great work shot weakly.
Jamie Anderson did anything but shoot weekly as his thunderbolt came back off the upright.
Ablewhite had a couple of half-chances before scoring with an excellent finish.
It was probably the best move on the match as Darkes slipped a superb ball through the Bridge defence for Ablewhite to run onto and finish neatly in the bottom corner.
Billinge continued to take the game to the visitors but the score remained 1-0 at half-time.
The second-half saw Bridge giving everything to preserve their unbeaten record but Billinge defended superbly all over the pitch and when the defence was breached Tom Hull was on excellent form between the sticks.
The game finished 1-0 - a result that keeps Billinge in sixth place.
In a game where all sixteen players got game time it was a superb collective effort from all the players and an excellent start to Geoff Parr's managerial career.
From Ablewhite's continued running through Chris Duffy's energy in midfield, Darkes' control and intelligence on the ball, Sean Latham's authority at the back and a confident display from one of the best young keepers in the area in Hull it was a polished and very satisfying performance in difficult conditions from The Storks second string.
Next Saturday (1 March) it is Reserve Division Cup action for Billinge Reserves as they travel to third-placed Styal Reserves for another tough encounter.
Kick-off at Styal is 2.30pm.
