Water scarcity and climate change present a serious constraint to development of agriculture in the Oriental region of Morocco as well as the realization of the nation’s export aspirations. Harnessing the region’s agricultural potential rests on sound water management at all levels, from large-scale industrial operations to rural smallholders. Over the course of 2 years, NEF's Agricultural Water Management project successfully mobilized 9,000 people in 22 communities throughout Morocco’s Oriental Region – including farmers, youth, women, and Water User Association members. To help them more effectively manage their water resources, the initiative provided trainings and supported the implementation of 21 microprojects. The results include as much as a 25% increase in the incomes of participants and a doubled increase in water flow, much more than just a drop in the bucket.
