Island, my Island was created in 1996, and is entirely computer generated. It was created, rendered and edited at the National Centre for Computer Animation, Bournemouth University, U.K. It is about an old tree (Erica arborea) growing at the top of Pico Grande, one of the highest mountains (1,654m or 5,426ft) in Madeira Island, Portugal. The tree was killed by a fire long ago, but the skeleton is still there, arms lifted to the sky. In my animation, the tree returns to life through magic, mystery and incantation. The mountain is pictured as a floating island surrounded by clouds, allowing for a double reading: as a mountain and as the actual island of Madeira.
