dieval met modern-glam in Ruffian’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection. Inspired by Petrus Christus, a portrait painter from the 1400s, designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais wanted to achieve “monastic opulence” with a touch of glamour in each of their pieces. Delicate pleated mock-neck collars, bishop bomber jackets, a long black coat, and the unicorn tapestry print had us dreaming of medieval Europe, when dramatic shapes reigned supreme.
M.A.C Makeup Artist James Kaliardos and TIGI Global Creative Director and Hairstylist Nick Irwin went for an opulent, uptown look for hair and make up. The full-on make up look created by Kaliardos stood out from the fresh-faced trend seen on the runway this season with a dark eye, bold lip, contoured cheek, and flawless complexion.
Models wore crushed cranberry from the AW14 lip palette, a color we’re dying to incorporate into our beauty look come Fall. In order to achieve the dark smoky eye, Kaliardos applied the Dusk Cream Color Base to the lid and crease, and then blended Burn shadow into the crease and underneath the eye. Stony Eyeshadow was dabbed just on top, while Electric Cool Pure Flash was concentrated on the inner corners. Evil Twin Technakohl Liner and Haute & Naughty Mascara finished off the smoldering look.
CATWALK by TIGI unveiled a new product to be released later this year: Your Highness Root Bost Spray—a mousse and blow-dry lotion combined in a hairspray. In order to achieve the high-end look he was going for, Irwin wanted more volume. He styled the hair with a slight curl, with volume at the crown, and a blown-back hairline.
While the long black robes and white ruffs read a bit somber, floral prints on elastic waist pants and full skirts in soft colors added lightness to the rich fabrics and religious silhouettes. The mix of bright chartreuse, cardinal red, and blush pink with restrained textures like tweed made for a pleasing juxtaposition. We were in love with the charming unicorn print dress and the red and blue tights were an artful use of color throughout the collection. Standout pieces included the monochrome looks, each with just enough sparkle to capture our hearts. Ruffian’s collection left us feeling both posh and pious.
