A short film by Kevin Couliau inspired by the documentary DOIN' IT IN THE PARK: PICK-UP BASKETBALL, NYC

Growing up playing basketball, the park was a battlefield that educated me. It was also a second home where I created lifelong friendships. Nowadays, wherever I am, the playground is a natural refuge, a sanctuary that helps remind me who I am.

In 2004, I started documenting playground basketball, walking in the steps of legendary photographers Rick Telander, Pete Kuhns and Larry Racioppo. I originally wanted to bring a different perspective, put the lights on an undocumented community through my website (R.I.P.) and the pages of Bounce, Reverse & Fadeaway magazines. Traveling around the world over the last 10 years, I captured beautiful courts in the West Indies, Eastern Europe, Northern Africa, and USA, and became particularly fascinated by empty ones (

New York City's basketball culture, history and abundance of playgrounds has helped it become the undeniable Mecca of the sport. You might have walked a thousand times in front of one of NYC's 700+ courts without having realized their beauty, story and soul. There's no other city in the world that combines such savant architecture and colorful public parks design. I am proud to share with you my perspective of this unique world. Enjoy!

Everything was shot during the 2010 & 2011 summers.
