If you want to get away for a few days in the winter to get some flying in, one option is Soboba, north of San Diego by an hour and 45 minutes and almost the same time from LAX.

Jerome Daust publishes a detailed daily weather briefing before 8:30 or so every morning. You may know him from his paragliding tips page at expandingknowledge.com/Jerome/PG/Main.htm

He’s a very welcoming and experienced pilot who is happy to help others get into the air.

Probably the best part about Soboba is the never ending lift. Even morning sled rides seem to take longer to get down, unless you give speed flying a try, which Jerome is more than happy to provide the equipment and instruction for any paragliders wishing to transition. I took him up on this last month, in fact.

They offer $6 rides up the hill in a quad, taking you to the 650 launch point, from which you can hike up the trail to the 800 or 1500 launch or choose a number of options along the way. They also have nice training hills at 110 feet and 250 feet. More info here: sobobasoaring.org

Recently I had just two days to get in some flying. 3 paraglider flights and a speed wing run netted 4 hours in those two days. Not bad for February. As you’ll hear me say at the end of this clip, ahhhhhh.
