Pamir Times conducted an informal and conversational video interview with Khan Muhammad, one of the first Wakhi medical students from the Wakhan region of Afghanistan. This Wakhi language conversation focused on the socio-economic conditions of the Wakhi people inhabiting the strategic Wakhan corridor of Afghanistan.
The objective of this interview is to virtually connect the divided minority Wakhi ethnic group as an effort to preserve and protect the language classified by UNESCO as definitely endangered.
According to a very rough estimates, about 80,000 Wakhi people are divided among four different countries: Pakistan (Gilgit-Baltistan & Chitral), Afghanistan (Wakhan Badakhshan), Tajikistan (Ishkashim Badakhshan) and Xinjiang in north-western China.
