Times have changed since the unexpected loss of 1986 Kentucky Derby Ferdinand, who was sent to his death in a Japanese slaughterhouse in the 1990s. The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and places like Akindale Farm have teamed up to rehome and retrain racehorses coming off the track and into new careers. Going from bored retirement life to jumping fences in 90 days was Stud Muffin, the 2008 winner of the richest race in the country for New York-breds.
