Raymond D. Herrell, 71, of Burney sustained major injuries Tuesday, March 4, 2014, when the vehicle he was driving drifted off Highway 299 west of Cassel and Sandpit roads about 11:51 a.m. Herrell was driving west on the highway at an unknown speed and allowed the 2000 Dodge Durango to drift onto the shoulder along the north roadway edge, CHP officer J.D. Mostoufi stated. The right front of the vehicle sideswiped a large oak tree, continued on the shoulder, struck a second large oak head-on and then overturned. The vehicle came to rest on its side and Herrell was trapped inside for more than one hour before fire personnel were able to extricate him, reports show. He was flown by CHP helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Redding where a nursing supervisor said he was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening.
